Reviews

Bentley's Blake Records almost needs no introduction to Blake Studies as it has been an invaluable resource to those wanting to know more about Blake through his contemporaries since the day that it was published. Bentley provides all available early biographies, diary accounts, and personal letters by those who knew Blake while alive to provide a portrait of Blake by those who knew him, beginning with information about Blake's family in 1714. The second edition, published in 2004, incorporates all the material of the first edition (except, I think, a list of books titled "Blake's Library," but that can be found in .pdf online) and adds the supplement, published in 1988, in addition to other discoveries made since 1988. Materials added since 1988 are listed in a convenient table near the beginning of the book, so that those who have already read Blake Records and the Supplement read easily find and read only the new materials. Those who wish to know about Blake and his life will find Blake Records to be a fascinating read.
