The provocative originality and subtlety of Johns's thoughts on art are evident throughout, making this book a vital contribution to the study of the artist.

Reviews

The majority of this text is interviews from the period 1958 to 1994. Not all the interviewers are prepared to plumb the depths of John's accomplishments. However, he responds to all of them with dignity and concision. Reading Johns' measured responses may give the reader a closer understanding of Johns' big ideas and problem solving processes. The notebooks and writings support the ideas presented in the interviews. If you are interested in how Johns made decisions in his art from the mid 50s to the mid 90s this is a useful and enjoyable book.
